about

Since 1996, I have been invited by various North American universities to present the wide span of new music which I have been presenting over the years. This repertoire brings together recent pieces and world premiers (from European classics to the "Bordeaux school") a long side works from a tradition graced by poetic and pictoresque memory. These live recordings realized with my faithful partner Yves Josset and the Apollinaire Quartet are testimony to the best moments of the tours.

The American public was able to discover a new and enthusiastic approach to the contemporary French saxophone, one that is open, modern, eclectic without masking the original visceral expressivity of the instrument.

The works on this recital program (CD1) belong to a category of character pieces where the time proven notions of stylistic musical judgement cannot be limited to score analysis. The committment of the player in these performance pieces is great that the sensorial energy projected by the performer can upset both the reading and the listening experience. In a jubilant transcendant gesture, one is taken beyond the scope of the score. If the player's instinct is innate, the reading and understanding of the text, the interpretation of the written effect is a long and laborious task, obliging us to personalize the expressive gesture while keeping as close as possible to the generative thought of the work. But, how can one approach musical extasy while adhering to the score but avoiding the show of style or releasing an expressionist regurgitation.

It is a long path filled with patience, self-denial and doubt but which is luckily punctuated by visits to living composers.
